Onward to Galafrey

I remember years when Susanne and I would sit on the floor in Mom and Dad's room and watch Dr. Who on PBS on Sunday evenings until we were reluctantly called away to help with dinner preparations. One of the best things about the show (besides the wilted celery stalk, the Daileks' "ANNIHILATE", the scarf, and Ace) was the theme music. Today, I found this rather strange but amusing link that the BBC is hosting where you can "make your own" Dr. Who theme. It's certainly worth a look if you remember anything about any of the various incarnations of the Doctor.

The veldt

Something about this reminds me of that Ray Bradbury story about the nursery that could be anything you wanted, and the kids turned it into a safari-themed room, and the lions ate all the adults...

When med students attack

Here we see the classic scenario resulting from overzealous med students who have a propensity to ascribe medical diagnoses to anything that moves. :) I rather like it.

All my base are belong to someone else

I keep quipping to people that I'm getting old. But now I think it must be true. My parents have decided to rent out my room. Just kidding. They're turning it into a library. But the net effect is the same - I no longer have a bedroom at my parents' house. I can't really hold it against them. How can I justify arguing that it should be left there waiting for me when I don't end up with the opportunity to occupy it more than 5 days a year? It sits there empty the other 360 days. They might as well make use of it.

But combine that with feeling out of sync with Michael at work, and I really do feel like I'm losing ground on all fronts.

A new year can't come fast enough.

She's going the distance, she's going for speed

Well, I did it. I pulled off my very first N6 training. I'm impressed. He's psyched. Never seen anyone more excited about memos, but hey, it's all good. I think one of the biggest benefits that VIA gets as I go and do these trainings is the networking and connections I make. Maybe one of them will eventually lead down a road that ends in funding?

Growing old

When I was in grade school, I had a lunchbox and thermos set I always had my lunch in. It was a metal lunchbox, blue and yellow, with ET on it. I have no idea what became of it; I'm pretty sure Mom must have thrown it out at some point. On a whim, I just searched it on Google and found out that the set would be worth upwards of $50 at the moment! You can see it here:

Some of these actually look kind of cool!

Came across this today while surfing my multitude of live bookmarks. It's a brief summary of 10 of the "most bizarre" programs for PDAs. Some of the program actually look very cool.

I knew there was a reason!

A few months ago, I noted that Starbucks was starting to ask my name whenever I placed an order. Apparently, this is to deal with the complications of asynchrony. Boing Boing explains: Boing Boing: Starbucks barristas as living software processes

Meanwhile, I have splurged, with help from officemates for the $99 "bottomless" mug for 2005 from Brueggers. This allows unlimited, free refills of coffee, tea, or soda starting from the purchase date (last Thursday for us) through 31 December 2005. This means that I will no longer have to choose between plain coffee, good and cheap at Brueggers or fancy coffee drinks with an extra walk at Starbucks. Once I use up my Starbucks card that is...

How come weekends aren't twice as long?

I feel that I need the first two days to calm down enough from the week to get to the point where, in the second two days, I can actually accomplish some of the things on my "to do" list. Here it is, Sunday afternoon, and I'm realizing I've done virtually nothing that really should be done this weekend.

Back and grinding

And no, not nearly that erotic. I have officially returned from my three weeks abroad. (Saw a funny billboard in Wellington. One guy saying "Have you ever been abroad?" and the other guy saying, "Nah, mate. I'm not into cross-dressing.") Already, after just one day of work, I'm exhausted, frustrated, angry, and have a full page To Do list written up. Only got through two of the items on it today. Missing how I had imagined things would be when I returned, I'm back to listening to the Garden State soundtrack.
