Something about this reminds me of that Ray Bradbury story about the nursery that could be anything you wanted, and the kids turned it into a safari-themed room, and the lions ate all the adults...

Distance is such a strange concept. It describes, simultaneously, the presence and absence of space. Often, when contemplating distance, I imagine an immense and barren landscape, stretching out before me with only the horizon to catch me before I am catapulting through sheer nothingness. How easy it is, at those times, to be intimidated by loneliness. Yet life is about distances, whether it's a journey from one place to another, mentally or physically, striving for balance and boundaries between work, life, and play, or seeking personal space, more of it, less of it... Life is the complex navigating of all distances so to remain whole.
